Around town: Carlyle House

Alexandria, Virgina, built in 1753.

The subtle six-inch projection of the central bay belies the even spacing of the windows. The quoins of the central bay work with the quoins around the door, the curved stair railing, and the chimneys to give the façade a central and upward thrust.  Interestingly, the quoins on the outer edges are just far enough away that they almost provide an outward pull.  I believe this is because the entire width of the central bay, including its quoins, is equivalent to the width of the flanking bays without their quoins.

So deceptively simple and stately.
