Design process: façade

Sketchbook > Tracing Paper> SketchUp model

Recent façade study which shows my typical process to get from an idea to a concept, as it were.  This is for a craftsman house with a tricky basement-level garage.

There is a direct connection from brain>hand>paper that cannot be replicated with a mouse or keyboard or stylus, but the convenience of “building” things once rather than drawing over and over cannot be denied, so I use a combination, going back and forth between paper and computer as I test different ideas.

The big leap that occurs between the last hand sketch and the completed design is because the process becomes temporal rather than physical– unseen are the changes to the model that have been made and discarded.
