Founded in 1823, the Virginia Theological Seminary is one of the nation’s oldest institutes of higher religious education. Much of the architecture dates to the late 19th and early 20th century, including St. Martin’s Deanery, the home of the school’s dean. This addition had to address the needs for privacy of the dean’s family, while allowing for large public gatherings for lectures, funerals, and other ceremonial events. Two large antique stained glass windows are displayed along the loggia facing the courtyard.
